Let’s be honest. Tourism won’t stop because of the current global situation, and people still want to enjoy their vacations somewhere.
Instead, everyone is looking for ways to adjust their plans due to the risks and costs of traveling to destinations currently heavily affected by the 2026 Iran War, such as the Middle East and Asia.
Originally, Morocco was not our first choice, but at the end of February and the beginning of March, when growing concern about fuel shortages and price increases shook the world, especially in tourism, we knew we’d have to choose our next destination wisely.
So Morocco came up. Why? Because it’s not a long flight from Budapest, where we flew from, and it’s nowhere near Iran or the situation there. Plus, the predicted fuel shortages in Morocco weren’t as severe as in other countries.
This is based on our personal experience in 2026, after traveling throughout Morocco at the end of March and for most of April.
We chose well and were able to travel through Morocco undisturbed, with only a few instances of running out of fuel at specific gas stations. But all it took was to drive to another one. Luckily, there are countless in Morocco!
We started our 4000-kilometer journey in Marrakesh, traveled the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs past Ait Benhaddou, all the way to the desert in Merzouga, before heading north to Fes and Chefchaouen.
Then, we hit the coast in Tangier, traversed the west coast, stopping in spots like the capital city of Rabat and the windiest city, Essaouira, and did a beach-and-surf vacation in Taghazout and Agadir before returning our car in Marrakesh.
Morocco is definitely affected by the 2026 Iran War. We can’t deny that.
However, from a tourism perspective, it’s the perfect time to travel to Morocco if you’re considering canceling trips elsewhere, such as the Middle East or Asia. Especially if you’re traveling from Europe.
At the moment, Morocco is the perfect destination for European tourists in 2026, joining Croatia as a top alternative for traveling outside the continent.
