Mahanakhon SkyWalk Bangkok: Our Honest Review & Visitor Tips

What is King Power Mahanakhon?

King Power Mahanakhon is Thailand’s highest outdoor observation area, with its highest point called “The Peak” located 314 meters above ground level at the 78th floor. From the skyscraper, you get a 360-degree view of Bangkok.

I still remember getting to the entrance and looking at the building towards the top – it really is high. 😁

From the top, you can admire Bangkok’s beautiful skyline with its tall buildings and iconic temples (such as Wat Arun). You can also take in views of its many waterways that make it such a unique city.

Can you spot Wat Arun in the distance? It’s super tiny! 😅

The biggest attraction here, though, beyond the epic view, is the glass floor. It’s the part where you can walk (with special shoe covers) on the transparent glass and admire the view below you! It can feel a bit scary if you’re scared of heights. 😀 But for anyone who loves it (like Arijana 🙈), it’s such a cool experience.

Things to know before visiting

Here are a few things that helped us plan our visit to Mahanakhon SkyWalk:

  • In case of bad weather (rain 🌧️, high winds 💨, storms ⛈️…), the outside area will be closed. So, we checked the weather prognosis before buying tickets. Of course, this can’t be fully predicted, but the good news is that if it does, you’ll be offered the option to revisit another day. No refunds, unfortunately.

  • Pack light! You can’t take food, drinks, big bags, backpacks, or suitcases in. We checked and saw they have limited storage space (and it’s small, only 25x25x10 bags), so we brought a very small bag. If you have luggage or bigger bags and aren’t sure what to do with them, check this luggage storage. We use this while traveling, and they have options near Mahanakhon.

  • Tripods and drones are forbidden! Yes, they check. 🙈

  • No phones or bulky items allowed on the glass tray (maybe only small cross-body purses). So, for photos, take them of each other (one on the tray, the other outside) or ask people around to take your photos.

  • If you’re scared of heights, don’t worry. The SkyWalk is perfectly safe to visit. However, if you’re really uncomfortable, you can still enjoy the views and skip the part of the glass tray. Even in that case, it’s still worth visiting.

Our experience & things to see/do there

When visiting big cities, we always love seeing them from high viewpoints like this. There is definitely something special about them. For example, we did something similar at Skydeck in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

However, this one in Bangkok is definitely next level! Mostly because of the Bangkok SkyWalk, the glass tray from which you can see down below, which gives you a unique experience in Bangkok. But, of course, the city view was pretty cool too.

Since we wanted to get the most out of our visit, we timed it for an hour before sunset so we could see it during the day, at sunset, and finally at night.

We didn’t get the most epic sunset because clouds hid the sun a bit, but the colors around sunset were still pretty epic.

eSIM mobile network

Get an e-SIM to stay connected! (10% off with code SHIPPEDAWAY) We recommend the 10GB plan for 7, 15, or 30 days, which is a really good deal, as it connects to AIS or True, the two best networks in Thailand.

Entrance and lines

Since we knew this was a very popular thing in Bangkok, and it would be even more crowded at the time we chose (just before sunset), we booked our tickets online to avoid waiting in line and potentially missing the sunset. We would definitely recommend you do the same, because who likes lines while on vacation? 😁

Plus, you’ll still have to wait in line for the elevator, though this one is usually fast.

Elevator

The elevator itself was an interesting experience. It goes straight to the 74th floor in only 50 seconds! And yes, we filmed the whole thing, and it was actually THAT FAST! How cool is that?

We even got a bit of a funky feeling in our stomachs. 😅

Indoor observation area

You can usually check the 74th floor first. This air-conditioned indoor observation deck has big glass windows where you can enjoy the view. It also has binoculars, benches, interactive touchscreens, and more. But we couldn’t wait, so we headed straight to the top! We returned to this level afterward to check it out.

Rooftop bar

Once we got to the 78th floor, we were in an open rooftop area with a bar and a DJ (definitely didn’t expect this!).

I think the DJ is only there for sunset, so you can enjoy a drink in a great atmosphere, since this is a rooftop bar as well.

You don’t actually have to drink anything here if you don’t want to, but it’s cool that you can. However, expect prices to be a bit higher since it’s Bangkok’s highest rooftop bar, after all.

If you just want a cool rooftop bar, I’m not sure this is the best spot. It will be crowded with people who come only for the views and try to squeeze into any spot for a photo. Of course, this can happen in other rooftop bars too, but not to the same extent.

Glass SkyWalk

On this level, there is also a SkyWalk, a transparent glass tray you walk on, and it’s the attraction we looked forward to most. This is 310 meters above the ground level.

Matej found this a bit freaky at first since he has a small fear of heights, while I (Arijana) fully enjoyed it and wanted to jump from excitement (yes, I know you’re not supposed to do that, so I didn’t 😝). But we both found it fun!

The glass area is pretty small, so it can get crowded. But if you’re patient, you’ll get a spot or moment for yourself. But don’t expect it to be empty, or that someone won’t be in your frame most of the time. 😅

We also noticed it’s busiest at sunset, but the crowds thin out as it gets dark.

💡 Good to know: You can only walk on it while wearing specific shoe covers. These are provided and included in the price.

You also can’t bring bags (small purses on your shoulders can be fine), phones, or anything else onto the glass. That’s why, for photos, you need to take photos of each other (one outside the glass tray and the other on it), or if you want to take a photo together, someone else has to take it for you. Luckily, there are enough people around for that. 🙈

Planning an active trip?

Don't risk it without travel insurance

We never travel outside our home countries before getting travel insurance. And sure, we don’t count on anything happening. But it can when you least expect it! 🤕

For example, Arijana twisted her ankle just because she took a wrong step when going down completely normal stairs. 🤦‍♀️

In those situations (and hopefully nothing worse), travel insurance comes in handy so you don’t have to pay the medical costs.

Plus, since it costs about 3 USD/EUR per day, it’s not a crazy expense, and definitely not something to ignore.  😷

The Peak – the actual highest point

Next is “The Peak”, the highest point of King Power Mahanakhon, only 4 meters higher than the glass tray.

It’s a great concept: you climb the stairs to get to the top, and those same stairs also serve as a sitting area (with cushions).

The view is not necessarily better from this part, and it can be even more crowded. We actually liked taking photos from the sides down as there was a bit more space.

Extra activities

There are a few add-ons to the regular SkyWalk experience, such as Tilt, which should be the most exciting. It’s basically a net of sorts that gets tilted above the city, and you feel it as you’re gliding above.

There’s also Skyverse, a futuristic space, and SkyRides, which offers VR experiences. These should be more interesting for families with kids.

We didn’t try any of these on our visit as Tilt didn’t exist yet (it’s a pretty recent addition). Though the Tilt experience sounds quite interesting!

Best time to visit & opening hours

Mahanakhon Skywalk is open daily from 10 am until 7 pm, with the last admission at 6:30 pm.

The best time to visit is about an hour before sunset to see Bangkok transition from day to night and, of course, watch the sunset from above.

This is exactly what we did for our visit to Mahanakhon SkyWalk. We didn’t get the most epic sunset because clouds hid the sun a bit, but the colors around sunset were still pretty epic. And we got to see Bangkok both during the day and night.

Check availability

But be aware this is the busiest time, though we don’t regret our choice. ☺️ We did notice that soon after sunset, the crowds thin out, so you get more space on the SkyWalk. 😁

For fewer crowds, you should visit in the mornings and on weekdays. But of course, this is one of those attractions you can visit anytime.

Important to know:

The Peak and the glass tray are closed in case of rain or bad weather (strong winds 💨, storms ⛈️, and similar). In that case, you’ll still have access to the indoor 74th floor, but anything outdoors will be closed.

How much time do you need?

You need about 1 to 2 hours to see everything and enjoy the views from every angle.

Plan on more time if you want to add extra activities, sit for a drink, or take lots of photos. 😃

We spent more time than planned since we really enjoyed the view. We even witnessed the IconSiam shopping mall night show from here. 🙈

Which ticket to buy & price

The basic ticket for Mahanakhon SkyWalk costs between 1000 (daytime) and 1200 (sunset) baht (around 26-32 EUR), depending on the time of day and age.

Children (3-12 years old) and seniors (age 60+) pay 50% less. Bring a passport, as staff may check your age when you buy a discounted ticket.

It can cost even more if you add extra experiences or attractions, such as virtual rides, tilt experience, photo options, food or drink coupons, and similar. Check all the options and prices here.

Where to buy tickets

We recommend buying your ticket in advance, especially if you plan to visit at a peak time, like sunset. We booked our tickets online in advance and skipped a massive line at the counter! But do check the weather prognosis before booking.

Best guided tours

If you’re tight on time, a few tours include King Power Mahanakhon in their itinerary, letting you maximize your limited time (and handle timing, transport, tickets, etc.).

Otherwise, you don’t need a tour for this. Just buy the ticket online here, and show up at the entrance. ☺️

👉🏼 These are the tours we recommend:

  • Day trip to Damnoen Saduak, Train Market & Mahanakhon at the end of the day – check details here (many love this tour as the guide can come with you to Mahanakhon and help you take photos)

  • Mahanakhon Skywalk, dinner cruise and night market tour – find more info here (this one is great as it starts at 4 pm to get to Mahanakhon for sunset and then the rest of the itinerary during the night, which means you have a free morning and afternoon for whatever else you want)

How we got there

Visiting Mahanakhon SkyWalk on your own is a perfect idea! That’s what we did! We bought tickets online and took public transport.

The easiest way to get to King Power Mahanakhon is the BTS Skytrain. Take the Silom Line to Chong Nonsi station and leave by Exit 3. From there, a covered elevated walkway leads straight to the King Power Mahanakhon building, so it’s a short, shaded walk of about 5 minutes.

👉🏼 You can buy a BTS One Day Pass here or book a private driver to take you around to this and other spots in the city.

You can also use the MRT, which is what we did. Get off at Silom station, walk through the connection to Sala Daeng BTS, and ride one stop to Chong Nonsi.

However, we felt like walking more, so instead of connecting to the BTS, we walked the rest of the way from Silom MRT station (a 15-minute walk). That way, we also stopped at Lumphini Park on the way.

If you’re renting a car, parking is limited, so it’s probably better to use public transport or a taxi/Grab.

Best way to explore Thailand?

RENTING A CAR

We love exploring places at our own pace and on our own time, especially to avoid crowds at popular destinations we visit. Plus, watching sunrises and sunsets at epic locations is a must. ☀

That’s why renting a car for us is a no-brainer, and an unmissable part of most trips. 🚗

We love having the choice to compare prices, choose different pick-up and drop-off locations (one-way rentals), and pay for a reasonable full insurance policy without going broke. 🤑

Final thoughts – worth it or not?

To conclude, we think Mahanakhon SkyWalk is a pretty cool place because it also has a rooftop bar, a glass skywalk, and a few other entertaining attractions.

Would we visit just to experience the rooftop bar? Probably not. We feel there are better places for that where you don’t have so many people crowding and trying to get the best photo. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t seem like an enjoyable rooftop bar experience to us.

However, we absolutely loved it for the view, as it shows how big Bangkok really is and that it’s much more than just the old part of Bangkok, with lots of modern skyscrapers and very busy streets.

If you haven’t experienced anything similar, especially a SkyWalk this high, or you just love city views like these, you’ll definitely love it.
