how to get to dubrovnik old town - Dubrovnik Old Town - Dubrovnik Old City - Dubrovnik Old Town Things To Do - Dubrovnik Old Town Attractions

By plane

Getting to Dubrovnik by plane is a convenient option if you’re coming from the USA or other European destinations.

You can find direct flights to Dubrovnik from major cities like New York, London, Paris, and Frankfurt. Alternatively, there are also connecting flights through major European hubs like Amsterdam or Munich.

Dubrovnik Airport (Rudjer Boskovic Airport) is about 20 km from the city center. It is connected by airport shuttles for 10 EUR one-way, taxis, and rental cars. You can book a shared bus transfer to the city center or a private transfer to your hotel.

Good to know: Many European cities only have direct flights to Dubrovnik during the summer peak season.

If you are already in Croatia, you can fly to Dubrovnik from Zagreb, the capital, or even Split. The flight to Dubrovnik from Zagreb lasts a bit more than an hour, and the one from Split is about 45 minutes.

By bus

Due to its coastal location, there is no direct train service to Dubrovnik, but buses offer a convenient alternative. The main bus station is located near the port and the Old Town, making it easily accessible.

The bus network in Croatia is well-developed, and bus routes connect Dubrovnik with other cities in Croatia and neighboring countries, providing a practical way to explore the region.

By ferry

Dubrovnik is well-connected by ferry services from various nearby destinations, including Split, Hvar, Brač, and Korčula, and there is even a connection from Bari in Italy.

However, checking the ferry schedules in advance is important, as they can vary depending on the season.

Additionally, we recommend booking tickets early, especially during peak tourist months, to secure your spot on the ferry.

By car

Renting a car in Croatia can be a convenient way to explore the stunning coastal scenery and picturesque towns at your own pace. To reach Dubrovnik by car from popular cities like Split or Zagreb, you can take the well-maintained highways that offer beautiful views along the way.

Getting around Dubrovnik Old Town

The only way to explore the Old Town is on foot. But navigating Dubrovnik Old Town is a breeze, thanks to its compact size and pedestrian-friendly layout.

The narrow streets and charming alleyways are perfect for leisurely strolls, but be prepared for lots of stairs at some parts, steep steps, and uneven surfaces, as the city is partially built on a hillside.

TIP: Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you’ll cover a lot of ground.

Best time to visit Dubrovnik Old Town

The best time to visit Dubrovnik Old Town largely depends on your preferences. The summer months of June, July, and August are the peak tourist season, with hot weather and plenty of festivals and events.

However, this is also when the city is the most crowded. Plus, in the summer months, the Old Town of Dubrovnik is a popular destination for cruise ships, and many day trips from neighboring destinations attract thousands of visitors each day.

Dubrovnik Old Town - Dubrovnik Old City - Dubrovnik Old Town Things To Do - Dubrovnik Old Town Attractions

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting Dubrovnik Old Town in the spring and fall shoulder seasons. The weather is pleasant, the crowds are smaller, and there are also fewer cruise ships.

May and September offer a good balance between weather and tourist numbers.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds entirely, visiting between October and April can be a good option, although the weather may be cooler.

Arijana once visited Dubrovnik Old Town for New Year’s Eve, and it was still an okay time. Yes, it’s colder, but at least there are fewer people. Imagine walking the city walls almost by yourself!

Dubrovnik Old Town Travel Tips

When visiting Dubrovnik Old Town, it’s important to respect the local culture and customs. The people of Dubrovnik take great pride in their heritage and traditions, and it’s important to be mindful of this during your visit.

Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, covering your shoulders and knees. And please don’t wear swimwear in the Old Town.

It’s also customary (and polite) to greet locals with a friendly “good day” (dobar dan) or “good evening” (dobro večer) when entering shops or restaurants.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. However, in Croatia we would usually round up the bill.

Dubrovnik Old Town has three gates: Pile Gate (western gate), Ploče Gate (eastern gate), and Buža Gate (northern gate). To enter the town, you must pass through one of these gates.

Pile Gate

To enter the Old Town of Dubrovnik, you will likely enter through Pile Gate, built in the 15th century and now the main drop-off spot for tourist buses and groups. This is a great starting point for your Dubrovnik trip since it leads straight to the Old Town and nearby attractions.

Don’t forget to take a moment to admire the intricate stone carvings and statues that adorn the gate.

Buža Gate

Buža Gate (Vrata od Buže) is the northern entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik. It was opened in the 1900s during the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s rule.

However, it’s worth noting that this gate has numerous stairs leading to the Old Town, so we recommend Pile or Ploče Gate instead.

The clock tower features two bronze statues known as the “green men” (Zelenci), which strike the bell on the hour. When the Bell Tower underwent reconstruction, the original Zelenci (green men) figures were replaced by replicas. However, the authentic figures are on display at the Rector’s Palace.
