To cut right to the chase, the best months to visit Phuket are between November and February, when it’s mostly dry and not too hot or humid.
However, not everyone can visit at the absolute best time, so in this article, we’ll dive deeper into each season in Phuket, so you know what you can expect, and if you should visit during a certain time or not.
Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate, so it’s important to know the specifics.

Thailand is a tropical country, so even when visiting at the best time, you can’t be sure to have amazing weather. Simply put, the weather can be unpredictable.
However, if you’re unable to visit Phuket during the high season when the weather is at its best, then fear not, as there are great alternatives.
Quick Overview
Hottest months in Phuket
March, April, and May are the hottest months in Phuket and Thailand. Ensure you drink plenty of water and use sun protection during these times. The heat here is no joke, and neither is the humidity!
How do you know the humidity is high? You’ll know! Especially when you feel everything being “sticky”.

Windiest months in Phuket
The wind starts picking up in April, which makes beaches less enjoyable as the waves get bigger.
This is also when debris/trash can wash up on the shore. Yes, even on some of the best Phuket beaches. It’s a regional (and global) issue.
However, it’s mostly connected to the presence of storms, and the local community often does a cleanup shortly after.

GOOD TO KNOW
Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) takes place in April. During this time, water fights are organized all over the country.

Rainy (monsoon) season in Phuket
Rainy or monsoon season in Phuket generally starts in late June and lasts till October, with its peak in September and October. This is the time when Phuket experiences lots of downpours and showers.
However, despite the rain, there can still be lots of sunshine and good weather. You just need to be prepared for the rain.

Visiting Phuket in the High Season
Phuket’s high season corresponds to the best time to visit, roughly spanning from November to April, with the peak season occurring in December and January, when the island experiences its highest number of tourists.
High season in Phuket means sunny and warm weather, calm seas perfect for swimming, and ideal conditions for day trips, such as island-hopping.

If you’re planning a visit during the high season, expect Phuket and its attractions to be crowded. So we definitely recommend visiting at times with fewer crowds (mornings, late afternoons).
Additionally, make sure to book things in advance (hotels, activities), since last-minute booking during Phuket’s high season is not the best idea. The best deals will be gone 100%.

Visiting Phuket in the Low Season
Phuket’s low tourist season typically lasts from June to October, coinciding with the monsoon (rainy) season.
However, not all months are equal, and Phuket’s low season can be equally worth visiting, and comes with the perk of being a much cheaper time to visit and enjoy the island.

The months of June and July are perfect for visiting Phuket at a less crowded time, and while the rains don’t last all day long. They’re often short, and you shouldn’t have a problem visiting beaches in the mornings when it’s calmer.
Plus, coming to Phuket in the low season means you can probably book that hotel or resort with a pool you may not have had the budget for in the season. The beauty of off-season travel!

As of the end of September, when we are writing this article, we are seeing some amazing discounts on otherwise expensive hotels and resorts.
For example, we found resorts in October discounted from 150 USD to 50 USD per night! You can also find similar deals in June and July.
Yes, October is considered one of the rainiest months, but it’s mixed with sun. Plus, that’s a fantastic saving that means you can have a more luxurious vacation for MUCH less. Check discounted resorts here.
In addition to cheaper accommodation, tours and activities are also discounted, with some costing up to 50% less than during the high season. You can find deals & discounts on this page (tours, experiences, activities, etc.).

Oh, and we’re not done yet! Low season is also the best time for surfing, as the combined effect of wind and passing storms brings some excellent swells to Phuket’s coastline.

Frequently Asked Questions
The absolute cheapest time to visit Phuket is during the low season, typically between July and October. However, July is your best month for cheap prices, which is also enjoyable (since it’s not raining all day).
After visiting Phuket at different times throughout the year, we can comfortably say that visiting the island in the low season is absolutely worth it. If you choose a good month, you won’t have rain every day, and the prices will be lower, allowing you to enjoy a more luxurious vacation.
Visiting Phuket during the monsoon season is not at all dangerous, as long as you follow the flags (red) at the beach, and don’t go swimming where and when you’re not supposed to. Big storms come and go, which won’t affect you all that much.
April, when the Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) takes place, is the best time to visit Phuket for culture. Read all about it on our Songkran Tourist Guide.
Final thoughts
After visiting Phuket at different times throughout the year, we can confirm that it’s worth visiting all year round.
Of course, you can’t expect to have the same experience in the driest and rainiest months, but in general, you can have a great time in both.
Frequent travelers to Thailand know that coming to Phuket from the end of May to, let’s say, July, can give you a fantastic vacation for less money.
