Soriška planina is located in the municipality of Železniki. The closest city is Kranj. There is a parking lot at the bottom of the starting point where you can park for free. Also, there is a hut with food and drinks, perfect for the start or end of a hike. You can explore this area on your own or with a tour guide if you want to learn more about history. This is also a great bicycle route, so if you’re a fan, I would suggest going with a bike.

An altitude of 1,307 meters makes Soriška planina a perfect starting point for many shorter and longer trips. The trail is easy, and everyone can do it. There are a lot of families with kids coming here because of all these exciting locations, which are fun but also educational for kids. I would suggest hiking in the autumn as it’s not that hot during the day. But whichever season you choose, you won’t regret it.

A location full of history

The Rapallo border went over the peaks of Soriška planina. That’s why here you can hike through the history taking the theme tourist trail where you see many remains of the Italian defensive fort system. You pass through the military routes, observation posts, bunkers, and army barracks with spectacular views of the Julian Alps, Lake Bohinj, the Škofja Loka hills, and other surroundings.

Hiking here is especially interesting because you can come to all of these old buildings and explore them. Don’t be afraid to do so, but take a flashlight, it will help a lot. It’s one of the most unique hikes I’ve been to.

The views from the top are unreal! I couldn’t believe my eyes, especially if you pick a day with perfect weather and sky full of puffy white clouds. On your hike, you’ll stumble upon some cows and sheep. But don’t worry, they are friendly. There are many places where you can sit and admire the view. Take the whole day for this if you want to enjoy it thoroughly and be sure to take some snacks on the hike.
